My First Method of Divination: The Yes/No Rock Method

One of the earliest forms of divination I learned as a child was incredibly simple—and surprisingly powerful. All I needed were two rocks and an indicator stone. It was my first magical tool, and even now, I find it just as enchanting as any crystal ball or tarot deck.
This method taught me to listen to my intuition and trust the quiet whispers of my energy. If you’re exploring divination for the first time, or just want to reconnect with the simplicity of asking a question and receiving an answer, this method is for you. Let’s dive in! 🌙

🔮 Think of this as a guide, not a rulebook.
What I share here reflects my own practice—intuition-led, shaped by lived experience, years of study, and always evolving.
It’s not meant to speak for all witches, paths, or traditions. Your way might look softer, louder, simpler, more ancestral, more chaotic—or something entirely your own.
That’s not wrong. That’s sacred.
Take what resonates. Leave what doesn’t. Trust your magick.
🌟 My Childhood Divination Days
When I was a little girl, I discovered this method in a book and promptly began asking my classmates to pose yes-or-no questions—then I’d give them an answer with my rocks. Kids were amazed, and it was a lot of fun! I even got some of the teachers to try it out.
I used to spend many recesses “playing fortune teller” this way, giving answers to all kinds of questions—sometimes even about the cafeteria’s lunch menu! Other kids even picked their own stones to try it out for themselves. This was back in the 90s, when those folded paper fortune teller games were popular, so my rock method really picked up in popularity.
I have a lot of nostalgia for this method, and it still feels good to do. Now I like to use tumbled crystals, and it’s one of the first divination methods I taught to my oldest son.
What is the Yes/No Rock Method?
The Yes/No Rock Method uses two rocks—one representing “Yes,” the other “No”—and a neutral indicator stone or object. By shaking them all together in your hands like dice and releasing them all at once, you ask your question and see which rock lands closest to the indicator. It’s simple, direct, and beautifully accessible for any spiritual seeker.
Tools You’ll Need 🪨
- Two rocks or small stones of similar size (to represent “Yes” and “No”)
- An indicator stone or small object (such as a coin, crystal, or shell)
- A clear surface to toss your rocks on
How to Use the Yes/No Rock Method 👐
Step 1: Hold all three rocks—the two representing “Yes” and “No,” plus the indicator stone—in your hands. Close your eyes and focus on your question, letting it form clearly in your mind.
Step 2: Gently shake all three rocks together like dice, concentrating on the question you have.
Step 3: Toss all three rocks onto a clear surface at the same time. Whichever rock (Yes or No) lands closest to the indicator reveals your answer—“Yes” or “No.”
Sensory Enhancements 🌿
Try lighting a softly scented candle, playing gentle music, or laying a soft cloth under your rocks. These small sensory touches can help calm your mind and connect you more deeply to the experience.
Personalization and Substitutions 🔄
Feel free to decorate your rocks with symbols or paint them in colors that feel aligned with your energy. For the indicator, you might choose a beloved crystal, a meaningful shell, or even a small cloth to mark your center. Remember, it’s all about your relationship with the tool.
Energy Check-In 🧘♀️
Before you begin, pause for a moment to check in with yourself. If you’re feeling scattered, anxious, or tired, it might be harder to receive a clear answer. It’s okay to wait and try again when you feel calmer and more grounded.
Magical Troubleshooting 🪄
What if both rocks land at the same distance from the indicator? Trust your intuition. Sometimes it means you need to wait for clarity, or that there’s no fixed answer right now. Take a breath, and try again later if you wish.
What if the answer feels wrong? If your gut says “this doesn’t feel right,” honor that. Divination is a conversation with your own intuition—it’s okay to ask again or seek clarity through journaling or a different method.
How often should I use this method? As often as you like! There’s no right or wrong schedule. Some days you might use it several times, other times you might go weeks without needing it.
Tips for Record-Keeping 📓
Consider keeping a small divination journal to track your questions, answers, and any patterns you notice. You might dedicate a separate journal just for divination, tarot, and other magical practices—or keep everything together in one main journal. This helps build confidence in your intuition and deepen your connection to your own guidance.
What to Pair This Method With 🌌
- Journaling about the question and answer
- A grounding meditation before divination
- Tarot spreads that explore the deeper “why” behind your question
No matter how you practice it, this method can bring a sense of playful curiosity and insight to your magical journey. Trust yourself, stay open, and have fun exploring the answers that come. 🌙
